Now that the water has cooled off we're getting a great trout bite. I had Dr. Jim G. and Steele D. as guests during the Nassau Sportsfishing Trout tournament and we had some good action on the last of the incoming tide and the first of the outgoing tide, all on live shrimp under a float. The previous weekend I had done pretty good with live shrimp on a bottom rig, but the trout were up top the next weekend. Go figure! We ended up weighing in 3 trout and a nice flounder that Steel caught - his first! Check out the pics. Hey, Let's go Fishing...call now to book a trip! |

After the red tide made it's way past Amelia Island, the fishing picked up. There's a smorgasboard of fish in the back water. Check out the Photo section and see a small Snook caught on a live shrimp in the Jolly River! That's almost to Georgia! The little guy must have been lost. I checked the water tempature and it was still 77.5 degrees. The same day we caught Red's, Trout, Flounder and whiting. We have hide tides the last week of October and these will probably be the last chance at tailin reds. GET WAY FROM IT ALL..... and let's go fishing! |

There's lots of bait in the creeks, especially nice finger mullet. We launched before sunrise last week, caught our bait under a dock light and were anchored at a creek mouth just after sunrise with about two hours before low tide. We caught some small redfish, a small trout, a couple of flounder and a few bait stealers. After the tide changed we pulled anchor and trolled the creek bank, pitching the finger mullet on a Jaw Jacker jig. WHAM! a 26" red took one of the mullet and the fight was on! He was caught and landed using a Shimano Compre medium action rod with a Shimano Stradic 1000 spinning reel. The reel was loaded with 10lb test braided Power Pro line and a 17lb test flourocarbon leader. A few more smaller reds were caught that day. THERE'S FISH IN THAT WATER! |

Where've I been?????
|
You may notice that in some of my photographs I was fishing out of a small flats skiff, the Mitzi. Back in January an acquaintance let it be known that he wanted to sale his Angler 2200 Grande Bay, a 2003 model; I checked it out, liked it, and bought it! There were a few things that I wanted to do to the boat to get it more "fishable" so I've spent a few months tinkering, here in there. Stuff like adding a couple of tackle centers, some rod holders, a GPS, a VHF radio, some more rod holders, a new battery charger for the trolling motor and a few other things! I also relocated the battery charger and batteries, replaced the trailer wiring, made some cosmetic repairs, replaced a couple of bait pumps, added a water separator and....whew, this is making me tired. LET"S GO FISHING! |

Launched at DeeDee Bartels on the north end and fished across from the boat ramp. Tide was high, but going out. Water temp 60-62 degrees. No bites. Fished the mouth of Jolley River with live shrimp under float and with shrimp and jigs, no bites. Went further up into Jolley, tide a few hours out, and caught a small red and small trout on a live shrimp under float. I was anchored 10' from a stretch of oyster beds, fishing out the back of the boat and thought I'd try drifting a bait between the boat and oysters. Bam! A 20" red hit the bait right at the boat. When I cleaned him I noticed a big bulge in his stomach that turned out to be a small lobster! The red was added to a big 'ole pot of seafood gumbo that night! |

Nassau Trout Tournament
|
|
Mike Pikula and I fished the tournament (Saturday Nov11th). We ran to the south end of Amelia Island and fished with live shrimp under floats. We caught a few trout (a couple were keepers) and a small red. We ran back to the north end at noon and caught a bunch more trout, more small reds, a black drum and a handful of blues. Most were caught on live shrimp under a float, although Mike did catch some on a red jig with white grub. We ended the day with (14) trout, (7) reds, (5) blues and the one black drum. Our three largest trout weighed in at 4.98lb. At least we were on the board! The weather was crisp and clear with lots of wildlife to see. |

Launched before daylight, fished Eagans Creek with a topwater, no luck. Bought live shrimp at the Bait House, headed up to the Jolley River. High tide due around 9:30am Caught a few small trout on live shrimp under a Cajun Thunder and a small red on a jig w/shrimp on the last of the incoming tide. Went to what I now call the "Mother of all Spots". Ended the day with 17 trout in the boat (3 "keepers") and 5 small reds. Most of the trout were caught on the outgoing tide with live shrimp under the Cajun Thunder. All of the reds were caught on a jig with live shrimp. Three of the reds had multiple spots (10,7, and 6). |

Launched late afternoon from North End boat ramp. Tide just starting to go out. Fished small jetties at Fort Clinch with jigs/shrimp and mud minnows, no luck. Fished the Jolley River with shrimp under a Cajun Thunder float, caught two small trout and two small reds. Towards dusk, oyster beds almost showing, cast an Excalibur Super Spook Jr. over an oyster bed and BOOM! An 18" trout exploded on the lure. Added three more 18"-19" on the lure. Switched to a jig with shrimp and went deep to the bottom where a 20" trout picked it up. Sank one treble in my finger, but overall a good day! |

Mike Pikula and I fished the afternoon outgoing tide using live and dead shrimp on jigs and under floats along with some topwater plugs and plastic tails on a jig. We caught some nice blues that put up a good fight, a few small trout, and an almost legal redfish. We were mainly targeting "ambush" points as the current swept past oyster beds and dock pilings. Water tempature was 75 degrees. My last bite was on a minnow colored topwater at sundown near some dock pilings in Lanceford Creek. The explosion was exciting, but the fight only lasted a few seconds when the trout shook loose of the treble. |
